EVA MARIE CASSIDY (February 2, 1963 – November 2, 1996) was an American singer and guitarist who was most known for her renditions of popular songs from the genres of jazz and blues, folk, gospel, country, rock, and pop. Her debut album, The Other Side, was published in 1992 and was a collection of duets with go-go artist Chuck Brown. Her second album, Live at Blues Alley, was released in 1996 and was her first live album. Despite the fact that she had been recognised by the Washington Area Music Association, she was practically unknown outside of her hometown of Washington, DC, when she died of melanoma in 1996 at the age of 61. A little more than four years later, Cassidy’s music was brought to the notice of British listeners when her renditions of the songs “Fields of Gold” and “Over the Rainbow” were broadcast on BBC Radio 2 by Mike Harding and Terry Wogan. Following the tremendous reaction, a camcorder video of “Over the Rainbow,” made by her friend Bryan McCulley at Blues Alley in Washington, was shown on BBC Two’s Top of the Pops 2. A short time later, the compilation album Songbird debuted at the top of the UK Albums Charts, almost three years after it had first been released in the country. The popularity of her singles in the United Kingdom and Ireland helped to raise her profile throughout the globe; her posthumously released recordings, which include three UK number one singles, have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Her music has also reached the top 10 of the charts in many countries, including Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland.
